The Duo Luciole brings together French mezzo-soprano Sophia Stern and Chinese lutenist Charlie Zhang. Since its founding in 2022, the ensemble has performed regularly in concerts throughout Germany. Their artistic collaboration focuses on music from France, Italy, and England from the Renaissance to the High Baroque, which they weave into colorful, lively programs with influences from jazz, contemporary music, folk songs, and spoken word. Expression and contact with the audience are also priorities for the young and poetic duo.
Sophia Stern’s career runs on two tracks in Germany and France, where she is regularly engaged as a classical and jazz singer, while Charlie looks back on a diverse concert career with performances at major festivals and on large stages in Europe, Asia, and the USA. Both studied at the UDK in Berlin, Sophia also studied comparative literature in London – she is also a librettist and artistic director of the berlied festival in Berlin, while Charlie Zhang received further training in Darmstadt, Nuremberg, and The Hague, which he deepened through numerous master classes with renowned specialists in early music.
With programs such as “Auprès du feu,” the Duo Luciole aims to capture the delicate atmosphere of an intimate song recital and recreate it in a fresh and authentic way with fresh and creative energy.
